In my artwork I deconstruct the stereotypical image of ‘pretty’ portraits that are part of our everyday lives. Often I create portraits that are far too close to for comfort, as the skins surface fully covers the canvas. This is very personal and I enjoy the boundaries it crosses when viewers encounter the paintings. Naturally, individual differences are present in a portrait: I enjoy exaggerating the tiny imperfections to create a portrait that is striking and compelling.
I enjoy focusing on the actual process of taking the image in order to create a painting, it is an exceptionally awkward and painful process. I think part of this awkward and uncomfortable development of the painting is present in the final piece.
